Overview:
Your textual analysis of Freshwater should hone in on a specific area of the book that you find merits
further discussion. Your essay must be guided by a thesis statement that, in keeping with the theme
of the course, applies the lens of gender.
Optional Prompts:
• Freshwater is divided in many ways, most frequently by the chapter perspectives of We, Asughara,
and Ada. Though Ada is arguably the protagonist, she guides the telling of her story least in
comparison to the other speakers. How do you interpret this limiting of Ada’s voice? Is it a
stylistic choice representative of the other speakers’ control over Ada, Ada’s lack of knowledge/
understanding of herself, or of Ada’s true identity?
• In an interview for Granta with Halimat Shode, Emezi clarifies that “The novel is
autobiographical, so I used my life as a chronological skeleton for the story…” How does Emezi’s
positioning of Freshwater as an autobiographical novel limit or expand readers’ interpretation of
Ada’s experiences?
• Consider the roles of Asughara and St. Vincent in Ada’s mind. How do these two figures shed
light on Ada’s gender and her own understanding of gender throughout the story? In what ways
do these two figures challenge or accept the common gender binary?
