UWG English Composition

Description

Please select two of the five prompts below and create a response of 500-800 words for each of your selections. Your responses can be organized however you like, but each should have 1) a clearly stated claim or thesis statement, in which you provide the reader with your main idea, 2) specific textual evidence from your sources, and 3) a sustained, thoughtful explanation of your argument.
Task
First, please read over the following prompts carefully. Consider what each asks you to do, and how you might approach your response. Plan how you want to begin this writing assignment and which texts from our class you might use to help you make your argument. Note that some of these prompts are extensions of or build upon some of your reflections and class discussions.
Next, choose TWO of the five prompt options below that you’d like to respond to.
We began the class by looking at JJ Cohen’s Monster Theories and discussing how those theories apply to monsters from antiquity and other cultures. We came to the conclusion that, among other things, monsters reflect cultural values, messages, anxieties, and fears. We also talked about cyborgs as monsters of the future. If cyborgs/AI always take place in a futuristic story, do Cohen’s theories still apply to cyborgs? If so, which ones? If not, why not?
What do you think Janelle Monae’s main argument is in her visual album Janelle Monáe – Dirty Computer [Emotion Picture]? What makes you think this? How does she seek to persuade us? What images, words, ideas, or concepts contribute to her message?
In our study of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, we looked at the connections between the creation of monsters and our own creation of technology like AI and cyborgs. What argument is being made in the article AI is not sentient, but we should treat it as such – Fortune? How do you know this is the argument? What evidence does the writer provide for their views? How effective is their argument? What makes you find it effective or not effective?
As we saw in our study of Frankenstein and A Tale of Two Sisters, there are several intersections between motherhood and monstrosity. What argument do you think the film A Tale of Two Sisters is making around motherhood and monstrosity? What elements in the film make you think so? How does the director use visual elements to make their argument?
Choose something from our cyborg/AI/mothers and monsters studies that interests you and analyze the argument being made in the text. What argument is being made in the text you chose? What elements make you think this is the argument? How effective is the argument being made?
NOTE: The goal in this essay is for you to analyze another writer’s argument argument, using the texts that we’ve studied together in class to evaluate how another writer puts together an argument and how effectively they do so (or don’t!). You are not required to use outside research for this; rather, aim to use at least two of the texts we’ve studied together to help you make your arguments. Your task, then, involves considering which of the texts we’ve read will 1) fit best with your chosen prompt(s) and 2) which ones you feel will help you make your argument stronger.
