Description

View TEDx: Conscious Empowerment and Collective Liberation.1. After viewing the TEDx now compared to at the beginning of the semester, how does the message land differently? What newly stands out and/or stands out differently?2. Identify 3 ways this talk has wound it’s way through the material you’ve read and learned over the arc of the semester. Please number your points in your discussion post.3. Finally, answer the questions I pose at the end. Type them into your discussion post and answer each one to the best of your ability. (Who will you become?, What will you offer?, How will your newfound choices expand the possibilities for others?)We are supposed to write about how the message landed differently. Here is my response for the beginning of the semester: Following a failed road trip to Las Vegas filled with feeling helpless and being ignored by people who chose not to help her, Klein had an epiphany that she would no longer seek validation from anyone else. Going further, Klein emphasizes to listeners that “it isn’t our fault” that we have set up expectations for ourselves. Bringing the talk back to Pat, Klein highlights that she was inspired to make an impact, as she saw a place for a possible paradigm shift that we can all share and choose to create. It is mentioned that “reckless individualism” is not the goal here, but rather achieving individual sovereignty and realizing everything is our choice. According to Klein, expectations can cause girls and women to feel stuck and unable to acknowledge their capacity for deliberate and independent decision-making. However, this discussion teaches women how to make decisions that benefit the group as a whole as well as how to make conscious, individual decisions. Each and every person may use this. We always have the option to ask for permission from ourselves whenever we want. Klein asks how each listener contributes and how their intentional decisions open up new possibilities for others.I found this TEDx Talk to be empowering and motivating. To give a bit of background of myself, I am an Iranian-American with light skin, blond hair, and blue eyes. I look much different from the rest of my family and from the Iranian community around me. This has caused me to face varied expectations when it comes to the Iranian community as well as everyone else. I have felt too Iranian for my American friends and too American for my Iranian friends. I feel that I have always tried to do things for the acceptance of others, but this has been coming especially tiring. I am also a bisexual male. My culture does not accept my sexuality, and my mother’s reaction when I told her recently caused me even more confusion. My entire life, I have tried to appear more masculine. It has been hard to battle the expectations for the ways men should react in certain situations, which is usually without emotion when I am a naturally emotional individual. At times, I become frustrated with myself because I don’t naturally act the way that other men around me do. Watching this TEDx talk has shown me that this is not my fault. This talk has shown me that in the same way that it is not my fault that I have these feelings about myself, it is also not my mother’s fault for her initial reaction. I now realize that my reactions can have an effect on others and that I should make an effort to be my true self.
