Program Mission Statement, Goals, and Objectives
Program Mission: The mission of this mental health program is to provide comprehensive
services in order to reduce the burden of depression in New York City’s black college-aged
population, ages 18-25 years.
Process Goal(s):
1) To bring more attention to current symptomatic depression in NYC high schools and high
poverty neighborhoods.
2) To increase understanding of depressive feelings in the young black neighborhood.
Process Objective
1) Within four years, depression in NYC’s young black students ages (18-25) years, will
decrease by 22%.
2) Within four years, 25% of black student will identify antecedents, triggers, and
consequences to acting out on depression
Learning Goal(s):
1) To raise black college students awareness and knowledge of suicide prevention and
mental health.
2) To reduce stigma associated with mental health disorders within the target demographic.
Learning Objective(s)
1) Each year, give at least six workshops and seminars on college campuses in NYC.
2) After two years, 75% of black students will use information technology to access
depression medical information and support self-education and clinical decision making
in addition to being able to identify positive coping strategies.
Behavioral Goal(s):
1) To increase assistance seeking behavior among black college students and to provide
direct help and resources to suicidal individuals.
2) To increase the adoption of positive mental health behaviors and decrease the
engagement in negative mental health behaviors.
Behavioral Objective(s)
1) To train at least 50% of peer support mentors to advise and assist college students
experiencing mental health difficulties within 6 months of implementation.
2) Within 6 months, 25% of individuals will decrease depressive behaviors, such as sleeping
too much, not engaging in physical activity, eating unhealthy, and a lack of motivation.
Environmental Goal(s): To provide Mental Health services to reduce the rates of suicidal
depression for young black students that are 18-25 years of age, who attend a New York City
College within the Bronx.
1)
Provide a safe environment on the campuses of New York City Colleges in the Bronx to
offer Mental Health services. Counseling can be offered with a provider either on campus or
virtually, and group sessions led by peers.
2)
Provide life saving medication Naloxone to all students and community members of the
Bronx.
Environmental Objective(s)
1) Provide mental health services in person on campus or virtually to reduce barriers to access.

students in New York City and increase the overall well- being through a multifaceted
approach including education, prevention, and treatment.
2) To develop a reproducible paradigm for culturally sensitive and community-driven
suicide prevention programs.
Outcome Objective(s)
1) Within 2 years of program implementation, there will be a 30% reduction in the
prevalence of black college aged students with moderate to severe depression in New
York City.
