Course Description
Introduction to athletic administration. Required minimum 50 hours of on-site administration
focusing on concentration area and conducted with St. Bonaventure intercollegiate athletic
department. Prerequisites: MGT 329, MKT 309, BSM 200, Junior Sports Management major

Course Objectives
The objective of the Sports Management Practicum II is to provide students with practical sport industry
experience directly related to the student’s concertation prior to an internship.

Regular reading of national outlets such as EPSN, Sports Illustrated, Fox Sports, NBC Sports are highly
recommended to develop an awareness of current issues in the sport industry. Students have access to
SportsBusinessJournal and the SportsBusiness Daily through the University library.

All Sport Management Practicum II will be graded on a “Pass/Fail” basis. Thus, grades of “P” or “F”
will be given. Students will be evaluated and given a passing grade based upon the substantial completion
of the procedures listed below. In addition, the student’s report MUST be of sufficient quality (at
LEAST a “B” paper) in order for a passing grade to be assigned.

Academic Honesty Policy at St. Bonaventure University:
Enrollment at St. Bonaventure University requires adherence to the University’s standards of academic
integrity. These standards may be intuitively understood and cannot, in any case, be listed exhaustively.
The following examples, detailed in full in Appendix B of the Code of Conduct
(www.sbu.edu/codeofconduct), represent some basic types of unacceptable behavior: cheating,
plagiarism, fabrications, obtaining an unfair advantage, aiding and abetting academic dishonesty,
falsification of records and official documents, and unauthorized access to records. Academic dishonesty
is a serious matter and will be dealt with accordingly, with University sanctions ranging from grade
alteration to the possibility of expulsion. Students should familiarize themselves with these very
important provisions of the Academic Honesty Policy, which is outlined in the Code of Conduct for
reference only. Acts of academic dishonesty are not processed through the University Judicial process;
the process for handling alleged violations is outlined within the policy. Please consult the St.
Bonaventure University Student Handbook (http://www.sbu.edu/docs/default-source/about-sbu/code-ofconduct-2016-2017.pdf?sfvrsn=6) for a list of unacceptable practices, penalties to be assigned and
procedures to be followed in prosecuting cases of alleged academic dishonesty. Further, the St.
Bonaventure University Undergraduate Catalog may be consulted for specific details on all academic
policies at St. Bonaventure.
Students with Disabilities
Students with disabilities who believe that they may need accommodations in this class are encouraged to
contact the Disability Support Services Office, Plassmann Room 100D, at 375-2065 as soon as possible to
better ensure that such accommodations are implemented in a timely fashion. Documentation from this
office is required before accommodations can be made.
Course Outline
1. Practicum BSM 300 earns one academic credit. Students should register for the practicum during a
semester in which they are completing the practicum requirements.
2. Students must work approximately 50 hours. Academic credit is granted whether the practicum is paid
or not.
3. Practicums may be taken during the academic semesters or during the summer months.
1. Students are expected to devote sufficient time to the practicum to receive the desired credits.
2. A written report (typed, double-spaced, 1 inch margins, Times New Roman font size 12) must be
prepared and submitted by the student intern. The paper should be of sufficient length to properly
document the breadth of the work performed and the credits earned. (Suggested length of paper would
be 3-5 pages. The written report should include the following information:
a. BACKGROUND – Briefly discuss the location, size, type of product, history, growth,
philosophy, etc. of the organization you worked with during the internship.
b. ORGANIZATION CHART – Include an organization chart and show where YOU fit
the organization; if the company cannot provide one, please construct one.
c. RESPONSIBILITIES – Comment on your major duties and responsibilities, discussing
work you performed, other duties you were assigned, your performance, etc. Be specific.
Feel free to include samples of your work.
d. PROBLEMS – Discuss any problems you may have encountered during the practicum
how you dealt with them.
e. COURSE RELEVANCE – Discuss the relevance of the courses you have taken thus far
your practicum; course relevancy does not have to be limited to just business courses, but
should include business courses.
f. PRACTICUM – Comment on the practicum program in general. Do you feel this is
beneficial; should credit be granted for effort, etc.?
g. BUSINESS PROGRAM – Discuss how effectively you feel the business programs at
Bonaventure have prepared you for a professional business career.
h. OTHER – Include any other comments that you feel are relevant.
