Thomas Jefferson served as the third President, and served two terms from 1801 to 1809. Jefferson knew the US needed to expand west, and he tried to explore a few times prior to becoming President. Once elected, he was given the opportunity to purchase Louisiana from the French. This doubled the size of the US at the time. Purchasing Louisiana became one of his biggest accomplishments as President. Another huge accomplishment for Jefferson was drafting the Bill for establishing Religious Freedom. His intention in the bill was to eliminate religious requirements for politics and banned states from forcing individuals to a certain religion. These two accomplishments were among three that he considered to be his greatest achievements in life. Although Jefferson had multiple significant accomplishments, he also had a few failures. One of which was The Embargo Act, which was a ban on all American cargo sailing for foreign ports. This caused a significant negative impact on the economy of port cities in the US. A second failure was his goal to destroy the Federalist system. He reduced the number of government employees, and shrunk the Army and Navy. He wanted to ensure that the US did not follow in Europe’s governmental footsteps. He wanted a government that respected the rights of individual states.
As the seventh President of the United States, Andrew Jackson held his office from 1829-1837. He was very progressive in his office, who supported slavery and westward expansion. He was highly suspicious of the current banking system, he felt that no single institution should have that much power and the banks did not support everyone equally. One of his major successes was the war of 1812. During this time, he served as a Major General when the British planned to overtake New Orleans. Andrew Jackson gathered his troops and used a special technique to ensure that guns were always firing. The British eventually retreated after losing more than 300 of their soldiers. This battle made Andrew a national hero. Another huge success for Andrew Jackson was paying off the national debt. He shattered the US Banking system, used the revenue from tariffs, and sold federal land to pay off debt. Although Andre Jackson had numerous successes, he also had some failures. One of these failures was the Panic of 1837, which in part, caused by Jackson’s economic policies. This was a huge decline for the economy that eventually spiraled into a five-year depression for the United States. Another failure stemmed from his dislike for Native American’s. His actions and policies caused the push for the Indian Removal Act in 1830. This law provided finances relocating the Five Civilized Tribes from North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, and Mississippi. He falsely stated that he was protecting the Natives and organizing a land exchange. Even when it was rejected by the Supreme Court, he proceeded with his plan anyway. The Trail of Tears occurred which was a march of Native Americans to modern day Oklahoma, in which thousands died.
