Description

Metabolism is different in different cells of the body. Some cells such as the brain can ONLY use Glucose as the energy source. Cells such as muscle cells can oxidize both fatty acids and glucose to obtain ATP. It always important to remember that aerobic cellular respiration produces the maximum energy per molecule of Acetyl CoA. Anaerobic respirat ion can generate energy but at a much lower level.
1. Apply what you learned this week to answer last week’s question, where is the energy stored to generate ATP through the ATP synthase (an endergonic reaction) ?
2. You eat the same amount of food. On Day 1, you spend all day in front of a screen studying. On Day 2 you study for while and intersperse this studying with exercising or vigorous physical activity. Most people report that they feel more “energized” on Day 2. Why does your body feel like it has “more energy” on Day 2? Reflect of Week 7 learning
3. Imagine you are a Bioinformatics researcher and the majority of your work happens at a computer.  Since you have had a sedentary life style for many years, you are gaining weight. You switch to a low carb diet to control energy intake and you find that you are basically unable to do any office work. But are able to play, run, exercise without any challenges. Combine learnings from multiple weeks to explain why this is observed.
4. Person A has been training to run a half marathon for 6 months. Person B is an average university student. Both people are asked to run a 5K at their own best pace. Why does Person B feel the burn in their muscles for multiple days whereas Person A does not. Reflect on Week 7 learning.
5. Mammals such as desert rats live in areas that have no surface water. They survive in this environment without consuming any water by eating seeds with extremely high fat content. How are these animals able to live without water? Where do they get their water? (FYI, like all eukaryotes and mammals, there cytoplasm water levels are similar)Chem 242 SP23
Exercise 4
Name:
Here are two mass spectrograms. For each one:
1. Determine the molecular mass of the compound and identify the molecular ion peak.
2. Determine the number of carbon atoms
• Use the following measurements for the heights of the M and M+1 peaks.
• Spectrum A: (M)+• = 100% of base peak; (M+1)+• = 4.3% of base peak
• Spectrum B: (M)+• = 37% of base peak; (M+1)+• = 2.9% of base peak
3. Determine the presence or absence of chlorine and bromine in the compound.
4. Determine the molecular formula.
5. Calculate the hydrogen de ciency index.
6. From the provided list of compounds, identify the molecule represented in each graph. Draw the structure alongside your
identi cation.
