College Writing 1010

Description

I need an essay written on the reduce prison sentencing for felons who were sentenced for the sales or possession of marijuana. The elements of an academic essay. You should have at least one sentence in each paragraph that includes details from the “justice” definition and details from the specific examples you have found.
Format: MLA, or in a format applicable to your discipline (APA for psychology and business, for example). Use page one header information for this phase of your essay assignment. Consult A Writer’s Reference (For MLA, MLA-5, page 198) for proper formatting of the all-important page one of the essay.
Class Notes Week 14: A Complex Thesis
What makes a good thesis for an academic paper? You have read the discussion of thesis statements in A Writer’s Reference section C1-c, and most of you have probably heard from many teachers about the importance and qualities of a thesis statement. As with other aspects of writing, crafting a thesis becomes more difficult when you are working with complex ideas and detailed evidence.
For an example of what can go wrong with thesis statements, you can go to to one of the many websites that provides (really bad) free college essays. I just found one that began this way:
We should take measures in order to reduce the amount of guns people possess, otherwise it may lead to a great number of tragedies.
This statement does meet some criteria for a thesis statement. It is the “central idea” of the paper, and it “requires supporting evidence” (Hacker and Sommers). It does not meet one other criterion, being “focused and specific.” For instance, who is “we”? What “measures”?
Even if these vague issues were cleared up, however, this thesis statement would not be appropriate for a college research paper in an upper-level course. (You might be noticing several grammar problems as well: the sentence is a comma splice, and it includes a vague pronoun reference. As is so often the case, these grammar problems are intimately tied up with the conceptual problems we are discussing here)To explain what’s missing, it’s helpful to see the qualities of a complex thesis: it should be
Qualified. Use modifiers and subordinate clauses to explain why and under what conditions your claim makes sense.
Arguable. It must be possible for a reasonable person to disagree with your claim. Otherwise, what’s the point of writing a whole paper about it?
Responsive to a question or problem. In an academic paper, this should be a question or problem that’s under discussion within one or more academic fields.
How does our example thesis stack up? Here it is again:
We should take measures in order to reduce the amount of guns people possess, otherwise it may lead to a great number of tragedies.
This thesis is not qualified. It makes a very large statement about what “we should” do. It does not limit the claim to any conditions, or ground it on any reasoning.
This thesis is arguable. Reasonable people do indeed disagree.
This thesis is not responsive. It does not acknowledge that any researchers work on this question or have already been discussing it. It is not addressed to readers in a specific field, such as political science or criminal justice.
Writing a complex thesis statement
As you have noticed throughout this course, we have treated a thesis as an idea that emerges from work with sources, rather than as a solid “position” for which a writer argues like a political talk-show guest. In each peer review activity, your classmates have looked around in your paper to find thesis statements hidden in odd corners, and often discovered a qualified, arguable, and responsive sentence that you wrote but did not think of as your thesis. In future writing projects, you may want to ask a friend to read a draft and do the same. The more you do it, the more you will be able to develop and locate complex thesis statements on your own.
