closely and write your first Art Historical Analysis about the art work.
The art you choose to talk about must include key terminology, concepts discussed in the reading
to help with your analysis.
1. An Introduction to Visual Analysis

2. Getting to Know the Artwork
You will now choose 1 artwork from you’re the assigned readings in the Gardner’s textbook from
Chapters 23 and 24. Choose from the following art periods: Post Impressionism, Symbolism,
Fauvism, German Expressionism, and Cubism (can include Orphism or Futurism).
Spend 5-10 minutes looking at the artwork, either in your book or on your computer.
A. Take notes and describe it, writing down your observations, how is the object represented?
Write down adjectives, descriptive words that come to mind.
B. Upload Notes along with your typed essay to Canvas. If they are hand written, upload a picture
of them.
3. Read Through Context
Read through the historical context and information that the textbook provides. Add important
information to your Notes Page (from section 2). Try to choose an artwork that has at least 2
paragraphs written about it.

Analyze the artwork by explaining the following in Essay Format.
1. Begin with a short introduction, tell me which artwork you chose, and why you chose it.
Keep it short!
Include in your first paragraph: Artist, Title (in Italics), Medium, Date

2. Explain, what is happening? What are you looking at?
3. Describe artwork in detail through the visual elements. Begin by describing visual elements

4. What art movement is the art a part of? What characteristics are shown
that fit in with the art movement?
5. Explain any contextual (historical background) information you have
learned from the textbook and lecture about the artist or artwork that
helps you to understand the meaning of the artwork.
Paraphrase to the best of your ability the information you have just learned. And how this
enhances your understanding of the artwork. -You will not need to create a bibliography for this
DO NOTE QUOTE IN THIS PAPER. You can mention another author’s ideas, but summarize them.
When paraphrasing, avoid sentences like, “The website says..” or “After reading the
textbook I learned..”
6. Conclusion your overall interpretation. What is the overall meaning? What can we learn/take
away from this artwork? What does it tell you about the peoples of this culture from analyzing
this artwork, their values?
